Who’s this course for

This course has been designed to help less experienced English teachers to acquire new tools and widen their perspective of planning lessons and teaching. It’s also ideal for more experienced teachers who want to get some fresh ideas and interact and learn from other teachers.

A course 100% online

St. James has adapted its long-standing teaching methodology to the online environment, emphasizing quality and communication.
Participants will find all the content of the course on the St. James platform which will be available 24/7.
The course presents 5 modules.
Each module will last 2 weeks.
Each module requires about 5-7 hours on the platform, plus the live lesson (90 Min).
Each module will finish with a 90-minute live lesson.
The total time dedicated to the course will be about 30-35 hours.

We’ll have a look at some of the most effective techniques used if TEFL and how to put them into practice.

Teaching Young Learners

We’ll explore the YLs classroom and present practical ideas to make the lessons interesting, engaging and communicative.

Teaching Teenagers

We’ll explore the teenage classroom and present practical ideas to make the lessons interesting, engaging and communicative.

Teaching Exam Classes

We’ll discuss practical ideas to help the students prepare for their English exams such as KEY, PET, First or CAE.

Methodology:
the flipped classroom

The flipped classroom is a teaching approach that reverses the traditional way of learning

Before the live lesson

Instead of listening to a lecture in class, teachers learn the basic concepts and information beforehand at home, on the St. James platform. This often involves watching pre-recorded videos, reading materials, or doing online exercises. They essentially get the «lecture» part of the lesson on their own time.

The live lessons (90 minutes each)

With the foundational knowledge already acquired, class time in the live lesson is freed up for active learning. This means teachers spend their time in the live lesson applying what they’ve learned, solving problems, discussing topics with peers, engaging in hands-on activities and getting personalized help from the tutor. The tutor acts more as a coach or facilitator, guiding teachers and addressing individual needs and misconceptions.

The main idea is to use valuable class time for deeper understanding, application, and personalized support, rather than just delivering information.

the platform + the live lesson

Here’s a breakdown of our approach to the platform and to the live lessons.

The platform:

Integrated Digital Environment: St. James has developed its own digital platform to offer its courses online. This platform is designed to recreate the traditional classroom experience.

Live Interaction: a key feature of their online platform is the maintenance of real-time interaction between the tutors and the other teachers. This is crucial for language learning, as it facilitates direct communication and conversational practice.

Visual and Interactive Materials: the platform utilizes digital presentations and different interactive materials to make their learning more personal and effective.

Forums: they provide a virtual space for teachers to connect with their peers and tutors. This helps build a sense of community, reduce feelings of isolation and encourage a collaborative learning environment.

Flexibility: the online modality allows students to choose the learning format that best suits their needs, offering an alternative to their traditional in-person classes.

The live lessons:

On Zoom: widely used because of its ease of use and reliability for video conferencing.

Personalisation: the live lessons will be excellent opportunities to discuss the different topics and understand how to apply them to everyone’s situations.

Problem solving: teachers will be able to ask relevant questions and get answers from the tutors and their peers.

Building relationships: these lessons will provide excellent opportunities for teachers to get to know other teachers and build a professional community.

Group size: each group can have up to 10 teachers.

The Tutors

Borja Uruñuela

Borja is the Head of Education at St. James where he works very closely with the teachers and the students. He is former president and head of training of ACEIA. He has an active role in ASEDEM, Asociación Española de Educación Emocional, and in the last few years he has been exploring Emotional Intelligence through an Emotional Intelligence Programme which he has implemented at St. James. He's also a Teacher Trainer, material writer and gives conferences throughout the country. Borja has been teaching English since 1991.

Zoi Sechlidou

Zoi has been dedicated to English language education since 2012, teaching both young learners and exam preparation classes. She holds a Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature and was awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) by the Department for Education in England. As Assistant to the Director of Studies at St. James, Zoi brings a wealth of experience, including participating as a conference speaker and publishing a paper on English Language and Literature. While in England, she further specialized in teaching young learners through various professional development courses.
